The Sweetwater House | New Construction

Our client approached us in need of a custom home design for an undeveloped property along one of Florida’s amazing rivers. During the design process, the 80-acre parcel was significantly impacted by the devastation of Hurricane Michael. While the dynamics of this property were instantly altered, the project goals remained unchanged--creating a special place to celebrate the holidays with family and maintaining the land’s pastoral qualities for the dogs to run. Our scope in this project included the site planning, the architecture, and the design and coordination of the interior and exterior finishes and fixtures.

Myers Park Condo Alteration

This late 1980's condo was originally built as a 2 bedroom / 3 bath residence. The owner came to us with the desire to add a third bedroom and another bath, which would ultimately relocate the kitchen, move the laundry, and rework the existing bathrooms upstairs. The scope of the interior alteration provided the opportunity to change the dated 80's style of the space to a more contemporary aesthetic. 

We were thrilled to receive 2nd Place for this project in the Residential Kitchen Category in the 2019 ASID Florida North Chapter Design Competition.

Highgrove Kitchen Remodel

A kitchen remodel offers the chance to improve the existing layout, enhance connections to other living spaces, introduce new design features, create additional storage, and update finishes.

We were honored to receive 2nd Place in the Residential Kitchen Category in the 2016 ASID Florida North Chapter Design Competition.

Betton Hills Pool and Privacy Wall

Situated on a steep slope, this new backyard pool needed to accommodate the change in height in addition to providing privacy between neighbors. The wall and planters wrap around the pool apron to create a unique opportunity for landscaping and drainage.

McAlister's Deli Courtyard

The Carriage Gate Center has been a retail destination in Tallahassee for decades. The new courtyard for McAlister’s Deli is located in the footprint of a former retail space that was difficult to lease due to low visibility. By removing the existing retail spaces, the new tenant, McAlister’s became an end cap tenant with increased visibility and presence in the center. The resulting space became the covered courtyard and outdoor entertainment space for the tenants. A wood trellis spans the distance in front of the courtyard, linking the center together and creating a safe edge from the traffic circulation of the parking lot.

The Patio at the Governors Club

This client needed a solution for a comfortable, outdoor dining space adjacent to the club for its members in the heart of downtown Tallahassee. The project 
site was nestled underneath a Magnolia tree that had been planted there by a founding member of the club. 

Of major concern was the impact that brick pavers would have on the tree in addition to the myriad of public utilities within the proximity to the Florida State Capitol.  Flexible porous paving was used along with cast stone and custom steel railings in order to complement the existing architecture and provide a design solution for the club and the existing surrounding landscape.

This project received an Honorable Mention in the Hospitality Category in the 2018 ASID Florida North Chapter Design Competition.

ASID Award-winning | Patio at the Governors Club

Rose Hollow Kitchen Remodel

This client approached us because he wanted to update the original 1980's kitchen in his townhouse. Sight lines were limited from the kitchen to the dining and living spaces due to a dividing upper cabinet wall. We first investigated some of the costs with demolishing the wall, painting/refacing the cabinets, and adding new counters. After some pricing exercises, we concluded that fully replacing the cabinets was comparable to giving them a facelift. 

We worked closely with Tallahassee Kitchen Center and Greg Hensley Builder Inc. to remodel the space for the client. Design changes included opening the wall between the kitchen and dining/hall spaces, adding new cabinets, counters, tile floors, paint, appliances, plumbing, and recessed lighting fixtures.

The Early Learning Coalition

This interior alteration for this non-profit benefiting children was moving to a smaller space due to advancements in technology reducing their need for space in their daily operations.

They planned to move to an existing office space and their programming needs were revised based on the amount of traffic that they were receiving on a daily basis. The new design solution incorporated several separate areas that transitioned from public, to semi-public to private offices while focusing on being an accessible and professional but child-friendly environment. The interior spaces included a new entrance lobby, a family services area, two conference rooms, an open circulation area for hosting events and classes, as well as private offices, small meeting rooms, and a breakroom for employees.

The theme within the build-out was to incorporate shades of blue that were already an important part of the non-profit’s branding as well as the introduction of contrasting vibrant yellows. Floor patterns, introducing the same carpet type in various patterns, such as a herringbone blend on the diagonal, a basket weave, or a random mix were utilized to express this common theme. In the family services area, a strong, hygienic, waterproof washable textile floor covering was used in a repeating pattern for children to be able to walk along “paths” or jump from tile to tile. Because the project was funded through a variety of budget line items, there was an area that was designed but not yet completed due to budgetary constraints. A rendering depicts a wall of interactive bookshelves for children to relax and turn the pages of a book. While the other elements of this room are complete, community fundraiser efforts are in place to see it to the finish as this is the last remaining piece to be provided. 

We were honored to receive 1st Place in the Corporate Category in the 2018 ASID Florida North Chapter Design Competition.

Ox Bottom Manor Kitchen Remodel

When we started this project, the client was generally happy with the overall floor plan of the existing space, with the exception of the drywall pantry and an unused counter in the corner next to the refrigerator. In the new design, the refrigerator wall was reconfigured for cabinets and counters in addition to a floor-to-ceiling pantry on the opposite side of the refrigerator. The kitchen finishes were also updated with new cabinets, counters, appliances, a subway tile backsplash, plumbing, and lighting fixtures.

Moore Pond Home Office

This home office space originally had stained wood built-in shelving around the perimeter of the room. We were asked to redesign the space so that one wall could accommodate a TV, a fireplace, and shelving.

Betton Hills Remodel

This major remodel offered the chance to convert this 3 bedroom/3 bath home to a 4 bedroom/2 1/2 bath home, which provided an additional bedroom space for the family without expanding the existing footprint. Re-configuring the floor plan for the necessary bedroom also offered the opportunity to bring better storage, laundry, and updated finishes to this 1968 house.

Hi Lo/Ty Ty Neighborhood

This project consisted of remodeling a 5' x 9' master bathroom. The original wood floor was to remain in place and the existing tub/shower was to be converted into a step-in shower with a sliding glass door. All plumbing, lighting, wall finishes, cabinets, counters, and hardware were updated.

This client had an existing kitchen with Uba Tuba granite counters and 4" backsplashes throughout. She wanted to add a full height backsplash on one wall, so we specified a custom blend from Oceanside Glasstile that worked with the colors of the granite.

I’ve always dreamed of having a clean, modernist home, and I’m happy to say that Alice and her team at Atelier Cohen led the way to making that dream a reality! I couldn’t be more happy with the project, my house looks like it could be featured in a Kinfolk magazine. I expressed my wishes of having a clean, natural interior aesthetic and they truly delivered – the natural light in my newly designed home is to die for. They also helped me turn my dated, drab living room into a spacious and cozy space in which I can’t wait to host a party.
